Chapter 11

An incubus doctor bandaged Vandrel in the palace’s small infirmary. He stuck a needle attached to a rubber tube in the crook of his elbow, and taped it in place. The tube led up to a glass bottle hanging on a hook above the bed. Vandrel craned his head to look.

“This is a wormwood extract,” the blue-skinned doctor said.

Vandrel started to feel a dizzying euphoria before the doctor left the room. He closed his eyes and let himself drift into a pleasing delirium.

He couldn’t tell if a few minutes or a dozen hours had passed when he heard the distant echoing voices of demons. The conversation sounded too far away for him to open his eyes.

“This is a fifteen minute recess, Zantus.”

“Understood. I want to know if he’s been disfigured.”

Somewhere buried deep in his mind he knew the blanket had been tossed off his nude body. It felt like whispers of air touching his skin and disappearing.

Vandrel’s moan sounded louder than the voices, but still seemed distant.
